I tried to explain to my friends that we're not as far removed from legal segregation as we like to imagine. In 1967, my white father and black mother couldn't legally live in Virginia after they got married so my dad sent her to Hawaii while he served out a tour of duty in Vietnam. That's right: While he was off serving his country, his wife had to move thousands of miles away because their chosen state said it was a crime to be married.
How can this pastor feel this way in 2011? Easy, he's using religion as an excuse for bigotry and apparently, there is no time limit on that, which is truly sad. While we're trying to move forward in so many ways, there are still too many of our neighbors who prefer to go backwards. :(
